Nixa Mo. (KY3) – The Nixa school board will address three books at the May 12 school board meeting after some parents raised concerns and appealed to the district to remove them from shelves.
In accordance with the school board agenda, the following books have been submitted for reconsideration under Board Policy KLB (Materials reconsideration).
- Homecoming by Yaa Gyasi
- Fun Home: a family tragicomic by Alison Bechdel
- Not all boys are blue by George M. Johnson
“The materials have gone through the review committee process, and each review committee has made a recommendation, the results of which have been presented to the complainant,” the school board agenda reads. “In each of the following three cases, the complainant was not satisfied with the committee’s recommendation and, as such, submitted a written appeal to the Nixa School Board for a final decision.”
Nixa School District received 17 formal requests for reconsideration on 16 unique individual titles. There were two that were presented with the same title. Parents have taken their concerns to Facebook groups and say the titles are inappropriately sexual in nature. There are many conflicting views on whether the books should stay or go in the Nixa community.
“I think it’s very important for us not to censor the books that our kids can get,” said Karen Perry, Nixa Parent. “I don’t think one parent’s opinion should come before other parents.”
“This is the first time in my tenure here and 16 years that the board has come to a board appeal,” said David Liss of Nixa Schools. “The board will decide and really set a direction for what’s considered appropriate with our books.”
