god of war iIt is full of memorable moments, although one of the most exciting comes at the end of the game and serves as a preview of what is to come in the sequel. Clearly inspired by this moment, an artist and God of War a fan named Mark Scicluna created a spectacular comic cover for the game.
At the moment in question, Thor arrives at Kratos and Atreus’ house, brandishing his hammer Mjolnir and preparing to fight as a storm brews over the characters. An iconic image that has had fans talking for years, many were excited to see what the fight between Kratos and Thor would be like, wondering if it could possibly top the former’s battles with Baldur. With God of War: Ragnarok release this year, fans will soon have their answer. For now though, you can appreciate this artwork from Scicluna.
Since the artist is a former Rockstar Games illustrator, it makes sense that he would be incredibly talented. There are a lot of great details to appreciate in his latest work, the most obvious being the recreation of the scene where Thor first appears. Kratos, Atreus, and Mjolnir translate well into the old comic style, with the angle of the scene recreated perfectly. The choice of a vibrant blue for the sky and yellow for Thor’s lightning bolt makes the piece even more eye-catching.
However, while a comic-inspired version of God of WarThe finish would be great on its own, what makes the piece spectacular is the artist’s eye for detail. They go above and beyond when it comes to making the art feel like an old school comic book cover, as the text boxes that say “Thor’s Mighty Hammer” and “All in Full Color” add so much to the piece. The title “Ragnarok is Coming” is a brilliant choice, while seeing the faces of Kratos and Atreus in the top left corner should look familiar to comic book collectors.
With a price of 25 cents and an incredibly elegant design God of War both present in the piece, there is much to appreciate for fans of the franchise. Unsurprisingly, there has been a lot of praise for this fan art on both Twitter and Reddit, with thousands of likes and upvotes accompanied by supportive comments praising the artist’s style. Perhaps the coolest comment of all came from Santa Monica herself, as the studio’s official Twitter account responded to applaud Scicluna.
While there was some division around Thor’s design early on, it will be interesting to see how players feel once they see the character in action. Given how much build-up there was in the original game for Thor’s appearance, his ruthlessness will likely make him a significant challenge for Kratos.
God of War It’s out now for PC and PS4.
