- Former President Donald Trump says he is writing a book called “The Crime of the Century.”
- He said it’s about how the 2020 election was stolen from him, an oft-repeated lie by Trump.
- Trump has used the label “crime of the century” to describe multiple incidents involving him.
Former President Donald Trump told supporters on Saturday that he is writing a book about his baseless claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, saying he will title it “The Crime of the Century.”
Speaking for more than an hour at an event in Austin, Trump criticized the integrity of the election, comparing the voting system in the US to France’s traditional approach, which uses only paper ballots and bans voting on absentee and early voting. He hinted that the votes in the US were tampered with while in storage.
“I mean, it starts so early and then they want to finish late, right?” Trump said. “This is the biggest deception, the robbery. This is one of the greatest crimes in the history of our country. And sadly, prosecutors don’t want to do anything about it.”
“This is the crime of the century. In fact, I’m writing a book about it called ‘The crime of the century,'” Trump said.
“I don’t think you’ll enjoy it. You’ll get really depressed when you read it, but we want to keep it down for historical reasons,” he added.
His unproven claims of widespread voter fraud have been contradicted by an overwhelming amount of endorsements from election experts and officials, multiple US courts, and federal agencies, including the Justice Department, that the 2020 presidential election was fair.
One of Trump’s central claims is that there were thousands of cases of voter fraud in six swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, which Biden won by a combined 311,257 votes. But a 2021 Associated Press investigation found only 475 possible cases of voter fraud among the 25 million votes cast in those states.
The more than 40 lawsuits launched by Trump and his allies to challenge the election have also failed.
The title of the book Trump says he plans to write – “crime of the century” – has been used before by the former president to describe the outcome of the 2020 election.
But he also used it to label other incidents involving him, including his impeachment trial and an allegation that Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign “exploited” internet traffic to gather information about him.
Trump has published nearly 20 books under his name, including a photo book containing captioned images from his time as president.
